Heroku deprecates Heroku-22 and blocks builds from 1 May 2027

Heroku deprecated its Ubuntu 22.04-based Heroku-22 stack on 20 May 2026, schedules end of life for 30 April 2027 and will block builds from 1 May 2027 while existing applications may continue running without stack security updates.

HerokuHeroku-22Ubuntu 22.04stack deprecationbuild block

Previous state

Heroku-22 was a supported stack for building and running applications on an Ubuntu 22.04-based platform image.

Current state

The stack is deprecated, then loses support and security updates at end of life; builds are blocked the following day although non-build functionality and existing app execution continue.

Who needs to care

Heroku applications whose stack is set to heroku-22, including applications that still build successfully during the deprecation window.

What to do

List all heroku-22 applications, move each to a newer supported stack, rebuild dependencies and native extensions, run release and application tests, and deploy before builds are blocked.

What the source does not prove

Heroku does not say existing apps stop running at end of life. The enforced boundary is build prohibition from 1 May 2027; continued runtime operation is at customer risk because the retired stack no longer receives security updates.
