GitHub starts retirement of Spark on github.com
GitHub Spark stopped accepting new users and new app creation on 4 August 2026; existing users can access Spark until 31 August to export existing apps, while already deployed apps continue to run after the Spark experience is retired.
Previous state
Before 4 August 2026, the current GitHub Spark experience on github.com accepted new users and allowed users to create new Spark apps.
Current state
GitHub Spark no longer accepts new users or allows creation of new apps; existing users retain access through 31 August 2026 to export apps they already created, and previously deployed apps continue working after Spark is retired.
Affected users
Who needs to care
Users of the current GitHub Spark experience on github.com, especially existing users who still need editable source for apps created in Spark.
Required response
What to do
Export existing Spark app code before 31 August 2026 if future editing is required, and treat any `llm()` dependency as a separate GitHub Models migration because that inference service already retired on 30 July.
Evidence boundary
What the source does not prove
The retirement applies specifically to the current GitHub Spark experience on github.com. GitHub explicitly says already deployed apps continue to work after Spark shuts down. GitHub Models and Spark's `llm()` function retired separately on 30 July 2026 and are not represented as part of the 31 August Spark access boundary.
