Previous state

Existing customers could continue using the GitHub Models playground, model catalog, inference API and BYOK endpoints after access closed to new customers in June 2026.

Current state

The full GitHub Models service and related API and BYOK surfaces become unavailable to every customer after 30 July 2026.

Who needs to care

Organizations and developers using GitHub Models for interactive evaluation, inference API calls, model catalog access or bring-your-own-key workflows.

What to do

Inventory GitHub Models usage, move model-access workloads to a supported alternative, test failure handling during the announced brownouts, and remove dependencies on the inference API and BYOK endpoints before retirement.

What the source does not prove

GitHub states the full service and named surfaces will be retired. It does not promise automated workload migration, equivalent model availability or commercial parity in Microsoft Foundry or GitHub Copilot.
