Previous state

Through 4 August 2026, AWS CLI v1 remained in General Availability, with regular releases that included new-service support, API updates for existing services, and bug and security fixes.

Current state

AWS CLI v1 entered maintenance mode on 5 August 2026. During maintenance, AWS limits releases to critical bug fixes and security issues, does not provide API updates for new or existing services, and does not add support for new regions. AWS lists 15 July 2027 as end of support.

Who needs to care

AWS CLI v1 installations and the scripts, CI/CD jobs, automation, and shared Python environments that depend on ongoing new-service/API/region coverage or on the CLI-bundled botocore and s3transfer dependency behaviour.

What to do

Migrate supported workflows to AWS CLI v2; test scripts with AWS's v1-to-v2 migration guidance or tooling, and where other applications share the Python environment, explicitly manage botocore or s3transfer versions rather than relying on the copies bundled with CLI v1.

What the source does not prove

AWS's 15 January announcement and 10 June dependency post scheduled maintenance mode for 15 July 2026. AWS's official aws/aws-cli announcement on 6 August records the actual transition on 5 August 2026 and General Availability through 4 August. The cited first-party sources do not state why the transition date moved; they retain 15 July 2027 as end of support and state that existing v1 scripts and workflows can continue working during maintenance unless an AWS service makes fundamental changes.
